MOSQUITO
CONTROL
The City of Kent Health Department monitors the
mosquito population on a weekly basis from May through September annually. This
is done by surveying large areas of standing water for mosquito larva. If these
large areas water are found to be active mosquito larvae they are treated, using
Altosid Briquets which is an insect growth inhibitor.
Altosid interferes
with the normal life cycle of the mosquito and prevents the development of adult
mosquitoes from larvae. For more information on the Altosid Briquets refer to
the links at the bottom of the page.
During the week of Memorial Day in May, the
Health Department begins to monitor for adult mosquitoes.
In those areas where excessive mosquito populations are discovered, trucks
are dispatched to spray, using MosquitoMist One and/or Anvil, which are less
toxic and used for the adult mosquito control during the time mosquitoes are most
active. For more information on MosquitoMist One or Anvil, please refer to the links
provided at bottom of the page.
Mosquito Spraying Schedule
should conditions permit are as follows:
Tuesday’s:
The west side of Kent is sprayed;
Wednesday’s:
the northeast side of Kent is sprayed;
Thursday’s: south side of Kent is
sprayed.
Please note that IF the female mosquito population is below 21, adult
spraying is not conducted. It is estimated that the spraying will result in a
40% to 60% reduction in the mosquito population.
Residents are reminded that mosquitoes breed in standing water. So follow some
of the tips listed below to help in reducing the mosquito population.
·
Install or repair window and door screens so that mosquitoes cannot get indoors.
·
Keep
gutters clean and free of standing water.
·
Empty water from flower
pots, pet food and water dishes, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, buckets,
barrels, and cans at least twice a week.
·
Remove discarded tires,
and other items that could collect water.
·
Be sure to check for
containers or trash in places that may be hard to see, such as under bushes or
under your home.

Health Department conducts this program, as mosquitoes are known to carry
