ASSESSMENT EQUALIZATION BOARD

Volunteer. Eleven vacancies.  Must be elector of the City as well as a property owner. Members of the Board shall hear objections to estimated special assessments for particular projects in the City. Term:  Three years commencing immediately.  Boards for specific projects shall be selected, by lot, from the Assessment Equalization Board.

                                                     BOARD OF BUILDING APPEALS

Volunteer. One vacancy.  Must be a registered architect.  Members need not be electors of the City. Members of the Board shall hear appeals to decisions of the Building Official and appeals for variances to the requirements of the Code.  Term: One three-year term.

 BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS

Volunteer.  Two vacancies.  Must be electors of the City.   Members of the Board of Zoning Appeals shall hear and determine all appeals; grant or recommend variances; and have the power to hear and decide any question involving the interpretation of any provision of the Zoning Ordinance. Members will also hear appeals for the Exterior Maintenance Code. Term: Three-year terms commencing 04/22/2013.

  COMMITTEE ON DESIGN AND PRESERVATION

Volunteer.  One vacancy.  Must be elector of the City.  Members shall have, to the highest extent possible, a demonstrated knowledge, experience, or interest in architecture and/or historic preservation. Members must possess a determination to work for the overall improvement of the quality of the physical environment of the City.  Term:  Three year term.

 FAIR HOUSING BOARD/HOUSING APPEALS BOARD

Volunteer. One vacancy. Must be elector of the City.  May not hold any elected public office at municipal, county, state or federal level and shall not be employed by the City, but may be employed by the County, State and federal government. Members hear complaints on alleged violations and/or unlawful housing practices; hear appeals on the enforcement of the Housing Code; and grant variances in cases of undue hardship. Terms: One three-year term commencing on 05/02/2013.

 PORTAGE AREA REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY

                                                                     (P.A.R.T.A.)

Volunteer.  One  vacancy.  Must be electors of the City for a period of at least three years prior to appointment. PARTA serves Portage County and works to provide transportation systems for the purpose of scheduled mass movement of passengers. Term: Three years commencing 7/1/2013.

 SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION

Volunteer.  Two vacancies.  Must be a resident of the City and possess some technical knowledge and/or strong understanding of environmental issues.  The Commission is responsible for the examination of the current and proposed policies and programs and shall make evaluations on their environmental impact as well as their effect on the livability and sustainability of the community.  Terms: One three-year term commencing 05/01/2013, and one unexpired term ending 08/19/2014.

NOTE: By statutory definition, "elector" means anyone of voting age and a resident of the City.  The Kent City Charter Section 61(d) mandates that all appointments to City Boards and Commissions shall be electors of the City, with the exception of the Board of Building Appeals.
