ASSESSMENT EQUALIZATION BOARD

Volunteer. Eleven vacancies.  Must be elector of the City as well as a property owner. Members of the Board shall hear objections to estimated special assessments for particular projects in the City. Term:  Three years commencing immediately.  Boards for specific projects shall be selected, by lot, from the Assessment Equalization Board.

 

                                                     BOARD OF BUILDING APPEALS

Volunteer. Four vacancies.  One must be a general contractor; one must be registered plumber; one must be a licensed electrician; and one will serve as an alternate.   Members need not be electors of the City. Members of the Board shall hear appeals to decisions of the Building Official and appeals for variances to the requirements of the Code.  Term: Four three-year terms commencing immediately.

 

 CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION

Must be either Kent or Franklin Township resident.  Responsible for administering Civil Service laws for Kent City employees and Kent Public Schools. Term:  One unexpired term ending 12/31/2014.

 

      PARKING ACTION COMMITTEE

Volunteer.  One vacancy.  Applicant must either 1) reside in the Central Business District; 2) Own and operate a retail business in the Central Business District; or 3) Own a business located in the southwest quadrant of the Central Business District (East of South Water St., west of East Main St., south to Summit St., and east to Lincoln St). Members of the Board deal with a variety of issues regarding parking in the downtown area.  Term: One unexpired term ending 5/11/2011.

 

FAIR HOUSING BOARD/HOUSING APPEALS BOARD

Volunteer. One vacancy. Must be elector of the City.  May not hold any elected public office at municipal, county, state or federal level and shall not be employed by the City, but may be employed by the County, State and federal government. Members hear complaints on alleged violations and/or unlawful housing practices; hear appeals on the enforcement of the Housing Code; and grant variances in cases of undue hardship. Term: One three-year term commencing immediately.

 

 

SALARY REVIEW COMMITTEE

Volunteer.  Number of members on Committee to be determined.  Must be elector of the City.  Members of the Committee will be a   nonpartisan group of citizens appointed by Council to review and make recommendations on the salaries and composition of the Council members.  This is an ad hoc committee that will dissolve after a recommendation is made.

 

SHADE TREE COMMISSION

Volunteer.  One vacancy. Must be an elector of the City. Complete custody and control of the shade trees planted on any public street in the City in conjunction with the Kent City Service Department. Term:  Four-year term commencing immediately.

 

SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION

Volunteer.  One vacancy.    Must be a resident of the City and possess some technical knowledge and/or strong understanding of environmental issues.  The Commission is responsible for the examination of the current and proposed policies and programs and shall make evaluations on their environmental impact as well as their effect on the livability and sustainability of the community.  Terms: Three-year term commencing immediately.

 NOTE: By statutory definition, "elector" means anyone of voting age and a resident of the City.  The Kent City Charter Section 61(d) mandates that all appointments to City Boards and Commissions shall be electors of the City, with the exception of the Board of Building Appeals.
